Born on 14 March 1974 to a Scottish
family, Gavin lived most of his early
childhood in Amersham, Buckinghamshire,
UK, before moving as a teenager with his
parents and three younger sisters to Brussels,
Belgium. Having always been very interested
in the arts it was here that Gavin began
painting in earnest. Strongly influenced
by the likes of Francis Bacon, Henri Matisse
and Mark Rothko, his work was very dark
and introspective with a strong graphic
style. Simultaneously he began songwriting
and, having started to play drums before
the move, played a few gigs with a school
band around Brussels. Musically his influences
spread between '70s rock and '80s alternative
pop with an interest in the burgeoning
electronica of the early '90s.
In 1992, having passed A levels in Art,
English and History, Gavin returned to
London to study art at Central Saint Martins
college where he undertook a foundation
year before moving on to the University
of Herts to complete a degree in Imagemaking
and Design. It was here Gavin met guitarists
Simon Herriott and Richard Nicholson and
in 1994 the three of them formed
The
Secrets. Despite some tempestuous
times, the band stuck together for 6 years
(being joined by Neil Robinson in 1997)
playing hundreds of concerts at venues
including London's famous Rock Garden,
the Mean Fiddler and the Orange and spawned
three independent albums, OTHER TIMES,
THE SECRETS and VIOLENT FACES. The band
finally split in 2000 but all other three
band members remain Gavin's close friends.
Meantime, Gavin had been progressing in
his professional career as a Graphic Designer.
Having started out working at a printers,
his first 'proper job' came in 1998 when
he joined
Rocket Design in London. During his
time there he taught himself the basics
of web-design and built the company it's
first website. This caught the eye of
the easyGroup
- the parent company of multi-millionaire
Stelios Haji-Ioannou's easyJet - and in
1999 he was invited to join easyEverything,
the chain of Internet cafés as
a designer. To date Gavin remains at the
easyGroup where he now manages all their
design output, from web design to outdoor
and press advertising.
In late 2001 Gavin was invited by ex-Secrets
singer Simon Herriott to join and play
drums for his new project, Colvex.
Joined by South African bassist Scott
Bremner the three piece have worked tirelessly
ever since, churning out punchy pop-rock
and gigging frequently around London with
showcases in 2002 at The Cobden Club and
The Borderline.
Having finally purchased some digital
studio equipment late last year Gavin
has begun to record some of the songs
he has written that hasn't fit in either
the Secrets or Colvex mould. In the interests
of finding a home for this essentially
solo material, Gavin began to build the
Ultrasoundz website which would become
in his eyes an archive to showcase his
work. At time of writing Gavin continues
to record and gig with Colvex and is Design
Manager for the easyGroup.
